Span
Grandstand span – clear width between columns and beams for efficient load-bearing structures
What is the span in grandstand construction?
The span is the distance between two adjacent supports of a beam or structure. In grandstand construction, it describes the distance between the supports of the main supporting structure. Larger spans mean more free space beneath the grandstand, but require stronger beams and lead to greater deflections.
Support spans in the Bender grandstand system
Bender's modular system offers various spans that can be combined as needed. Standard spans are chosen to provide an optimal compromise between the available space beneath the stands and cost-effective girder dimensions. For special cases – for example, when larger passageways need to be kept clear beneath the stands – special girders with greater spans are used.
Span and beam dimensions
The beam dimensions depend directly on the span: a larger span requires larger beam cross-sections. Bender optimizes the spans for maximum cost-effectiveness.
Span and clearance profile
If access points, passageways, or pedestrian tunnels must be kept clear below the grandstand, the clearance profile determines the minimum span. Bender achieves the required spans using proven special support structures.
