Cross slope

Cross slope of the grandstand – lateral gradient for drainage and terrain adaptation

What is a lateral tilt in grandstands?

Cross slope refers to a lateral inclination of the grandstand surface or the ground beneath it, perpendicular to the main line of sight. It can be caused by the natural terrain and must be compensated for by the grandstand's construction. An unbalanced cross slope leads to unstable standing conditions and uncomfortable seating positions.

Cross slope compensation using the Bender system

Bender's modular system can compensate for cross slopes by individually adjusting the support foot heights and the support system. Height-adjustable support feet allow for the compensation of cross slopes up to a defined degree. For steeper slopes, special structural solutions with adapted structural elements are developed. The design takes into account all terrain slopes identified during the site survey.

Cross slope and drainage

A slight cross slope can also be used to drain the grandstand area at outdoor events. Bender plans the drainage direction so that rainwater reliably flows away from the spectator area.

Cross tilt and stability

Cross slopes affect stability because they generate overturning moments. Bender takes the cross slope into account in the stability analysis and designs the anchorage accordingly.
